EGENCO DISMISSES MK32.3 BILLION DIESEL GENERATOR COST CLAIMS

The Electricity Generation Company(EGENCO), has dismissed reports that it is hiring external diesel generators and spending MK32.3 billion kwacha every month to operate them, describing the claims as misleading and based on flawed calculations.

According to the Press release dated 7th September 2026, says the diesel generators in question are its own units located at Mapanga, Kanengo,Lilongwe A and Lubinga, and that it has no plans to hire external generator.

The Company further says government has allocated US$8.1 Million for the procurement of critical spare parts to rehabilitate non- functional units, with the targeted return to service of the generators by December 2026.

EGENCO has also challenged the reported MK32.3 Billion monthly operating cost, saying the figure is based on assumptions that use retail pump fuel prices instead of wholesale prices applicable to power generation, as well as unrealistic assumptions about continuous generator operation and fuel consumption.

The company says the public should therefore disregard the reported figure and rely on verified information regarding the operation and rehabilitation of its diesel generators.

A MAN IN BLANTYRE CONVICTED OF WIFE'S MURDER AFTER 5 YEARS TRIAL

The High Court Criminal Division in Blantyre has convicted Lucius Wilson of murdering his wife, Cecelia Yakob whose body was found in a maize field in May 2021.

Delivering the verdict on Friday, the Court said it was satisfied with evidence presented during the trial linking Wilson to the killing.

During proceedings, the Court heard details of the couples relationship including testimony on Wilsons treatment of Yakob and treats he allegedly made before her death. The Court also examined the circumstances of Yakob's disappearance and Wilsons movements around the time of the incident.

In his defense, Wilson told the Court he was in Lilongwe attending his brothers funeral when the offence occurred, However the state argued that his alibi did not cover the critical period during which Yakob was believed to have been killed, leaving his whereabouts unaccounted for.

A post-mortem examination later confirmed that  Cecelia had been strangled.

After reviewing evidence and submissions from both sides, the Court found Wilson guilty of murder and the matter has been adjourned for sentencing. The Court has directed both the prosecution and defense to file submissions within 21 days.

The state was led by Principal State Advocate Layna Kulesi from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, while Wilson was presented by the Legal Aid Bureau.

NYAMILANDU NOT RULING OUT KUNKUYUS APPEARANCE BEFORE COMMITTEE

Moses Kunkuyu appearance before the Parliamentary committee investigatigating the June 10,2024 plane crash is not guaranteed. The committee Chairperson Walter Nyamilandu Manda says it will first assess key witnesses before deciding who to invite in the final phase of the inquiry. 

This is according to the committee’s chairperson, Walter Nyamilandu Manda, who says he is not ruling out Kunkuyu’s appearance but will determine whether to invite him after assessing the matter with all committee members.

Kunkuyu, who served as Information Minister under the Malawi Congress Party administration, requested in May this year to be among the first people to appear before the committee.

He said his interest in appearing before the committee was partly because the issue of the aircraft’s black box keeps coming up, even during the course of the current inquiry, and that it would therefore be in the public interest for the committee to hear from all those who have been mentioned in connection with the black box.

However, the former minister who is also MP for Dedza Mulunduni, has not been invited during either the first or second phase of the inquiry, with Manda saying he could be considered during the final phase, when the committee will engage politicians.

“At the right time, the committee will sit down and assess whether to invite Honourable Moses Kunkuyu to testify in the appropriate phase, which is the third phase,” said Manda.

He said the committee is still examining key witnesses as part of the ongoing second phase of the inquiry.

“We are still calling the witnesses, and I cannot rule out the possibility of Honourable Kunkuyu coming. We will engage politicians in the final, third phase,” Manda said.

The plane crash claimed the lives of former Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others.

FROM LAST YEAR COURT BAIL TO BWB SUSPENSION-Yeremia Chihana Face Fresh Scrutiny

Barely a year after being granted bail in a related case involving allegations of abuse of office and failure to declare interest in Constituency Development Fund resources, Yeremia Chihana is facing fresh trouble after Blantyre Water Board suspended him from his position as Chief Executive Officer over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of power.

But what has led to his latest suspension?

A memorandum issued to all members of staff and the general public by the Acting Director of Human Resources and Administration, Lawrence Kadzitche, says the suspension follows a resolution made by the BWB Board on 28 August 2026.

The Board says Chihana's suspension is being effected under Clause 3(d) of his contract of employment and will remain in force pending an inquiry into the allegations of misconduct.

         

During the suspension, Chihana has been barred from visiting BWB premises, sites or offices unless he is expressly invited in writing by the Chairperson of the Board or a designated representative.

The memorandum further says he will not be allowed to communicate, either directly or indirectly, with BWB clients, suppliers or members of staff regarding BWB business.Any communication involving the suspended CEO is expected to be channelled through the Chairperson of the Board or a designated representative.

Reports on the suspension indicate that the allegations include Chihana allegedly misrepresenting the Board while seeking funding for an institutional modernization programme.

Chihana is also accused of allegedly appointing an acting Director of Finance without the knowledge and approval of the Board.Another allegation concerns the obtaining of a K500 million overdraft facility from First Capital Bank without the knowledge or approval of the Board of Directors.

The suspension comes just months after Chihana was appointed BWB Chief Executive Officer on 13 April 2026, on a contract expected to run until 12 April 2029.

The latest development also brings back memories of Chihana's previous legal troubles.

As on 17 April 2025, Chihana who was Mzimba North Member of Parliament for the Alliance for Democracy, was granted bail by Principal Resident Magistrate Clemence Chamwenda in Mzuzu.At the time, Anti-Corruption Bureau Principal Legal and Prosecutions Officer Daniel Nyasulu said Chihana was facing two counts of abuse of office and one count of failure to declare interest in relation to Constituency Development Fund, CDF, matters.

Among his bail conditions, Chihana was required to pay a cash bond of K1 million and provide one surety with a non-cash bond of K10 million.

He was also ordered to report to the Anti-Corruption Bureau offices in Lilongwe every fortnight.

During that time,Chihana had not yet taken plea in the matter, as the case was awaiting the appearance of other suspects from M'mbelwa District Council who were also expected to be involved in the proceedings.

The suspension by the Blantyre Water Board now places Chihana under fresh scrutiny, as he faces allegations of misconduct and abuse of power in his capacity as the water utility's Chief Executive Officer.

The Blantyre Water Board is expected to provide further details regarding the suspension and the way forward concerning the allegations against Chihana.

MPONDA MOB CASE: 20 Suspects Face Court in Balaka Today

The Second Grade Magistrate's Court in Balaka District is today Wednesday, August 26, 2026 continuing further hearing of Mponda Area incident in which angry mob looted and destroyed property belonging to Hassan Safili Obeya aged 51 of Maloya Village in Traditional Authority Nankumba in Mangochi, suspecting him of human trafficking a woman who sells vegetables.

The case is will be presided over by Second Grade Magistrate Stanford Majoni and the 20 suspects are answering offences of theft and malicious damage.

Apart from State Prosecutor Inspector Rodrick Kamuona of Balaka Police Station who has been taking the case, Counsel

Asma Osman Kapoto of Kapoto and Company has also joined the case on the side of the state.

Bail matters will also be addressed today, Wednesday August 26, 2026 and the court adjourned the case last week Friday to this week on Wednesday August 26, 2026, to allow sufficient time for the state to assess the property damaged to each accused person and determine their value.

Currently, situation at the court is quite and normal as Police Officers from Balaka Police Station has tightened security at the court.

43 REMANDEES GRANTED BAIL THROUGH COURTS

 

Courts recently conducted in Blantyre, Chikwawa and Nsanje with High Court Judge Justice Kamowa have resulted in 43 people being granted bail.

The 43 individuals had been on remand on suspicion of having committed homicide-related offences. Some had remained in custody for more than two years without their cases progressing to the High Court.

Among those granted bail was Frank Njanji from Nsanje, who had been on remand since March 2024. During this period, his case had not been committed to the High Court, and he had not been brought before the Court to apply for bail or have his case formally commence.

Njanji was accused of causing the death of a man following an altercation at a drinking joint. According to the information presented to the Court, the two men became involved in a dispute after one of them allegedly became upset over spilt beer. During the ensuing altercation, the man later died.

Following his arrest, Njanji's case remained before the Magistrate's Court and was not committed to the High Court. As a result, he was unable to apply for bail because the Magistrate's Court did not have jurisdiction to try the matter.

“If it wasn’t for this Camp Court, I was not sure when my case would be handled because I didn’t have a lawyer and I had no idea when I would appear before the Court,” said Njanji.

During the Camp Court proceedings, Principal Legal Aid Advocate Doreen Kawisa applied for the committal of Njanji's case to the High Court and subsequently applied for bail on his behalf. Justice Kamowa granted the application.

The Camp Court proceedings revealed that many of the cases involved individuals who had spent extended periods on remand without being brought before the High Court or having their matters progress through the justice system.

Principal Legal Aid Advocates Tiwonge Penama, and Patricia Chimbalame, Senior Legal Aid Advocates Marion Gondwe, Chipiliro Mafuta and the late Ishmael Masiyano, Legal Aid Officer Effort Kusakala, and Senior Clerical Officer Julius Salim joined Kawisa in making the Camp Court sessions a success.

ROAD DEATHS DROP BY13% IN 2026-MPS Reports

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has recorded a significant drop in road traffic accidents and fatalities during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.

Overall, the road traffic accidents decreased by 6 percent, from 1,894 cases in 2025 to 1,784 in 2026.

Similarly, the number of fatal accidents dropped by 15 percent, from 411 to 351, while the road traffic deaths decreased by 13 percent, from 464 to 406.

Regionally, the Central West and South West regions accounted for 68 percent of all reported road traffic accidents.

In terms of casualties, men are the most affected, accounting for 78 percent of all casualties and 84 percent of fatalities.

However, the people aged between 25 and 44 years are the most affected age group.

Meanwhile, the pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users, accounting for 43 percent of all casualties, followed by passengers (28%), motorcyclists (14%), pedal cyclists (9%) and drivers (6%). Also, the driver behaviour, particularly excessive speed, remained the leading cause of the accidents.

MPS urges all road users to continue observing traffic laws and exercising caution on the roads. The Service will continue intensifying traffic law enforcement and collaborating with stakeholders to further improve road safety across the country.
