As Mij Online reported:Police arrest a 19-year-old man Yohane Mphatso for the murder of a 62-year-old woman Alena Banda.The death follows a church "deliverance" ritual at Zamkutu Zion Church in Lilongwe that involves whipping.

The suspect severely whips the woman with a wooden stick during the session. She collapses and is pronounced  dead at the Kamuzu Central hospital. 

A postmortem shows she dies from trauma shock and cardiac arrest caused by the assault. Police recover the weapon and the man will answer a murder charge.

MEC URGES MEDIA:LEAD VOTER EDUCATION FOR 2025 POLLS

Malawi's Electoral Commission (MEC) is calling on the media to be the driving force behind voter education ahead of the September 2025 elections.

MEC Chairperson Justice Anabel Mtalimanja made the direct appeal during a meeting with staff from the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) in Lilongwe.

Justice Mtalimanja urged media outlets to take a leading role in providing Civic and Voter Education (CVE). She emphasized this is crucial as the country prepares for the polls scheduled for September 16, 2025.

This meeting is part of the MEC's ongoing efforts to boost voter participation through CVE outreach. The commission sees the media as a vital partner in ensuring citizens are informed and ready to vote.

DPP UNVEILS MAJOR CONSTITUENCY PLAN FOR MALAWI

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has announced a significant new economic empowerment and development package targeting constituencies across Malawi.

Central to the plan is a pledge to allocate MK 100 Million annually per constituency specifically for business loans to women, delivered through dedicated women's economic empowerment initiatives.This funding aims to boost female entrepreneurship and participation in the local economy.

 Alongside support for women, the DPP promises MK 100 Million per constituency every year to provide Malawian youth with access to soft loans for starting or expanding their businesses, directly addressing youth unemployment and fostering enterprise.


The party also commits to substantially increasing development funding at the grassroots level, promising  MK 5 Billion nationally per year for a Constituency Development Fund. 

This significant investment will support vital local infrastructure and community chosen projects. Recognizing the importance of sports, the DPP further pledges MK 50 Million per constituency annually for sports development, aiming to nurture talent, improve facilities, and promote healthy lifestyles nationwide. 

The DPP states that this comprehensive package of constituency-focused investments empowering women, supporting youth entrepreneurs, boosting local development, and investing in sports  is designed to drive strong national economic growth. 

The party projects that these measures will help propel Malawi's economy to achieve an annual growth rate of 6.5% by the year 2030.

DPP target of 6.5% economic growth by 2030 reflects its confidence in this locally driven strategy." The DPP emphasized these initiatives as core to their agenda for national progress.
